Mari Lywd - A South Wales tradition

The Mari Lwyd is a tradition that dates back to the 1800’s.

A horse’s skull is decorated in ribbons, bells and usually a white cloth, then taken from house to house. The Mari Lwyd would ask for permission to enter the occupant’s home in the form of song, and the occupant would have to reply, also in song, a reason as to why they should not be allowed to enter.

This ritual would go back and forth until one party gave up and either the Mari Lwyd moved on to another house or the residents would let the Mari Lwyd and it’s followers enter the house for food and drinks.

We wanted to honour this tradition on the back of this hoodie and we’re amazed by how it has turned out. Everyone we have shown this design to has recognised it instantly so we know that we have managed to capture the tradition in this hoodie.

We have added the words “Mari Lwyd” down each of the arms, this gives the hoodie a modern twist and further showcases this tradition.

Made out of 85% organic ring-spun combed cotton and 15% recycled polyester.
